Zhongmei Lei had already taken dance lessons, but everyone said that a poor country girl would never get into the prestigious Beijing Dance Academy. In 1977 when they held open auditions, the 11-year old girl went on a hunger strike until her parents allowed her to try out. She beat out 60,000 other girls for one of 12 coveted spots and went on to start her own dance company that made its New York debut when she was still in her 20s. This is her inspiring story as told by her husband, renowned journalist Richard Bernstein.
