In the late 19th century, a female architect was a rarity, but this was not a deterrent for Julia Morgan, who often visited San Francisco with her family and spent hours puzzling over the stunning construction. After a number of rejections, she finally made it into the prestigious all-male school École des Beaux Arts in Paris and went on to become California's first licensed female architect. She designed over 800 buildings.
