Product Description:

When a young African girl was sold to the Wheatley family in Boston in 1761, they called her Phillis after the ship she had arrived on. Breaking the unwritten rule in New England to keep slaves illiterate, the Wheatleys encouraged Phillis in her passion to learn and she eventually went on to become the first published female African-American poet.
