Given how popular Thomas the Tank Engine is today, it's surprising to remember that it was created in the 1940s. The story behind Thomas begins in 1917 when creator Wilbert Awdry, listening to steam engines outside his window, imagined them talking to each other. Eventually, Awdry told train stories to his son, and his wife encouraged him to write them down. Good idea!
