When should babies start using blankets?

You can use a receiving blanket to wrap your baby right away. However, it’s recommended that you don’t use a blanket in a baby's crib until they are at least one year old. That’s the age when most children have the strength and dexterity to roll over and move blankets away from their faces as needed. Your child may also begin to adopt a favorite blanket as a security, comfort, or transitional object.

How to swaddle baby in four steps

Using a swaddling blanket that wraps your baby snugly helps your little one sleep better, longer and safer. Swaddles are used for babies under 3 months old to mimic the feeling of being inside. In just a few steps, you can successfully swaddle your baby:

  • Step 1: Position blanket as a diamond and fold down top corner. Place baby with head above fold.
  • Step 2: Position right arm by side. Take corner of blanket on baby’s right side and pull across right arm and chest and tuck beneath baby’s back.
  • Step 3: Position left arm by side. Take corner of blanket on baby’s left side and pull over baby’s chest. Secure underneath baby.
  • Step 4: Take bottom corner and pull up over baby’s feet and chest and tuck underneath swaddle under chin. Be sure not to let any fabric cover baby’s mouth or nose.

Swaddling protects your baby against their natural startle reflex, which means better sleep for both of you. It may help calm a colicky baby. It helps reduce anxiety in your baby by imitating your touch, which helps your baby learn to self-soothe. It also keeps their hands off their face to prevent scratching. A wearable baby blanket (aka sleeping sack) is often introduced once your baby is strong enough to wiggle out of the swaddle wrap.
